Genre Iconography Mood Board

Thriller Collage

I created a thriller collage of DVD Covers, Film posters , Typical thriller scenes, Costumes, Lighting and Props. I did this to develop my knowledge on key aspects of a thriller.  Instantly you can tell that the collage is a thriller because of the colour scheme, which includes black as its associated with death which is very common in a thriller, black also gives a sense of mystery and suspense as its a very unrevealing colour. Blue is also used which is a very emotionless colour that describes some of the characters personality in a thriller ( Murderer, Cold blooded ). Green represents jealousy which can be a common theme in a thriller.  The lighting in each individual set design photo is  dimmed and dark blueish , this may be done to create mystery as the lighting can cover the killers identity and keeps the audience guessing. Dimming the lighting can also create a sense of suspense as it tells the audience something is going to happen. The characters create mystery as they are commonly dressed in dark clothing which  doesnt give away the characters personality straight away,  they also dont give a lot of information away through their facial expressions.  You realise its thriller based due to the type of characters involved: Cop, Detective, Hooded killer and Victims which are all common characters played. The props consist of guns, police tape, torches and blueprints which also tells the viewer that the genre of the collage is a thriller. The location is a key aspect of a thriller as they are mainly based in the adult-world like Cities, Houses and Warehouses, as you can see these types of locations are present in my collage.

At the end of the lesson the class gathered together as a whole to put all our knowledge of what we have learnt together on the whiteboard about the mood and atmosphere of thriller films. Every student had some input on this activity.

Why have I done this Timeline Task?
I did this task to acknowledge how many slates there actually are in an opening 3 minute title sequence , so when it comes to making my own creation I can make my project look as professional as possible. Also looking at the sequence it made me became aware that the names of the actors and companies involved need to be projected in a certain order, ( Production company ALWAYS has priority of first slate as the production is their property ). I also learnt that the main actors also prefer to own there own slate as it represents more importance and some actors may become very competitive when it comes to this. Whilst watching numerous title sequences it also helped me to get an idea on how to create a title sequence which suits the genre of film I will be creating and how to give an insight to the viewers on what the films going to be about and keeping them interested at the same time, ( Horror genre-  Erie, dark music, suspence, tense and creepy atmosphere, mood of fear , glimspe of villains and weapons,  gothic or bloody styled font, spooky abandoned setting ). I also learnt that title sequences had to be at the begining of every single film due to legal and copyright reasons , and that some directors despise them as they are commonly known to cause the viewers to loose interest. Most directors would prefer to jump straight into the storyline to hook the viewers onto the film.

Titlte Sequence, 9 Still Screenshots and Annotations - (This is England)

This is an opening screenshot to introduce the name of the film. You can tell this is the name of the film as they used big bold font which is different from the other slates. The font colour (white) may have been chosen because it gives off a plain and urban atmosphere which may symbolize some of the areas and characteristics of the characters. The background of the shot tells the viewer that the setting of the film is going to be set in a poor location and a city gone corrupt.

This shot introduces the main star actor of the film, "Stephen Graham" , you can tell this as the name has its own slate which represents more importance. The party in the background suggests the role of the character is going to be wild and free.

This screenshot resembles underage sex and raving which is associated with drugs , this is wild shameless behavior.  The sex element to the photo indicates there will be sexual relationships later on in the film. The raving side shows that the characters may have a live fast, die young mentality. The photo as a whole gives the viewer an insight on how some of the youths in the film will be acting and how they will be portrayed.

This is footage of Margaret Thatchers wedding , I think this was included in the title sequence because it was a big occasion for England and shows a sense of pride to be British. But also the numerous amount of union jacks reinforces the fact that political views and British government will be introduced later in the film. Also they are celebrating the occasion which indicates civilization coming together as a unit and symbolizes unity being a main element to the film.

This is footage of the 1980s riots and is showing a lady getting arrested , this shot suggests crime and violence will also be a main feature to the film. The timescale of the footage also tells the viewer what era the film will be taking place in.

This shot shows gangs coming together and fighting for what they believe in as they have determined facial expressions and this indicates gangs will be running England as they are freely parading down the street. Also all the members are skinheads so this tells us what gang will be present and what kind of characters to expect as well as certifying what era the film be set in.

This picture is of a gang member being violent to a police officer, this shows that the city has gone corrupt and morals have gone, and gangs and civilization has gone out of control because of the protests. So opinions are being shown through violence. The picture also foreshadows that law and law breaking will be major topics in the film and that the gang members are high in authority.

This is a screenshot that symbolizes racism and shows that racism will be a major topic in the film as the foreigner has been specifically targeted with a smashed window. This is also shown through numerous union jacks being shown off throughout the sequence by skinheads, so the crime most probably was committed by a racist english citizen.

The posture of the skinhead gang members in this shot symbolizes strength and confidence as they are standing tall and strong. It also indicates they are proud to be English and represent and fight for their country as they are wrapped around the flag together so it also symbolizes unity. The whiteness and clearness of the background also gives a sense of freedom to the skinheads.

This screenshot is important as it represents the media , and media is crucial to the film as most of the characters views and opinions have been influenced through the media, which has controlled they're beliefs which has resulted into racism and violence, which seems to be the major topics in the film itself. So by this screenshot being presented , I predict media to play a huge part in the film.
